CONCEPT

The Savior Who Came to Destroy My Life: A graphic inspired by the film "The Handmaiden" directed by Park Chan-wook. It depicts the romance and solidarity between Sukki, a Korean woman raised by a group of fraudsters in Korea during the Japanese colonial rule, and Hideko, a Japanese young lady who is controlled by her uncle and cannot leave her mansion surrounded by a huge number of books, and is used as a tool by the patriarch. This phrase is how Hideko expressed Sukki's existence, and it seems to have also spread among women living in modern Korea as a term to represent the existence of feminism. As a person living in Japan, I wanted to wear the ideas of this work, which depicts feminism as the key to liberation from imperialism and colonial rule, in my modern life. I drew the main visual of the film, the hands of Sukki and Hideko joined together, and just by copying it, the atmosphere of romance between women was conveyed, so I realized the amazing expressiveness of Chan-wook and the actors.

The Messiah Who Came to Destroy My Life

Graphic inspired by the movie “The Handmaiden” directed by Park Chan-wook. The film depicts the romance and female solidarity between Sook-hee, a Korean raised by a fraudulent group in Korea during the Japanese colonial rule, and Hideko, a Japanese daughter who is used as a tool of the patriarchs, unable to leave her mansion, which is under her uncle's control and surrounded by a vast collection of books.

“The Messiah Who Came to Destroy My Life” is how Hideko describes Sook-hee's existence, and it has also become a popular term for the existence of feminism among women living in Korea today. I, living in Japan, wanted to wear the ideology of this film, in which feminism is portrayed as the key to liberation from imperialism and colonial rule. I made a drawing of Sook-hee and Hideko's joined hands in the main visual of the film, and I realized the great expressive power of Chan-wook and the actors, as I could feel the atmosphere of romance between women just by making a reproduction of it.
